Dirty Pretty Things - REVIEW

Film of the Day #50/ 300

When is a thriller not a thriller? When British director Stephen Frears makes it. The synchronicity between script, stars and cinematography falls square on his shoulders, however, he fully realizes the potential. Dirty Pretty Things is an intelligent and extremely well-made romantic drama that tells an intriguing story with economy and insight. A sympathetic and engaging movie; Dirty Pretty Things explores the quirky and gritty life of the London underworld where immigrants work crappy jobs and trade kidneys for citizenship. This is a slice of modern, urban realism that plays like a dark, grimy version of Casablanca. An incredibly entertaining picture with a first-rate ensemble cast lead by the magnificent Chiwetel Ejiofor. London’s never looked so ugly!
